Travel Guide for Stores in Crooked Island, Bahamas - Crooked Island Purple Travel Guide
Crooked Island with its small population of 330 people has only a few stores. These stores do not have long opening hours. As an example, the Green Valley Food Store is open 7:30am-5pm, Sunday through Friday. It is important to note that the Landrail Point settlement is mostly settled by Seventh Day Adventists and that means that you cannot buy alcohol or tobacco and that everything is closed from sunset on Friday until sunset on Saturday for Sabbath.
Also, if the owner is sick or has other things to do, then the stores may temporarily close at any time during normal business hours.
How many supermarkets are on Crooked Island?
We have found 3 supermarkets stores on Crooked Island and there may be more.
The supermarkets here are basically one room in which food items and non-food items like home and vehicle repair items, over-the-counter medicine, body care and other items are sold.
Crooked Island is supplied by ship three times a month. The ship arrives Friday's at around 2pm and we found that the new supplies make it to the stores by about 4:30pm, shortly before the stores close and remain closed on Saturday.
Don't be surprised to see empty shelves and no fresh fruits or vegetables on Thursday or Friday before the ship comes in.
Supermarkets and Grocery Stores in Landrail Point
Green Valley Food Store
Green Valley Food Store is the largest supermarket on the island with the biggest selection on Crooked Island.
This store also has a gas station, where the store attendant pumps gas out of a gasoline tank truck.
Grocery prices are about 2.5 to 3.5 times higher compared to where we live in the US.
Credit cards are accepted, but gasoline purchases incur an extra credit card surcharge. So, you may want to pay for gasoline in cash.
The store is air conditioned.
Scavella's Convenience Store
Scavella's Convenience Store is a grocery store with a small selection only a few hundred feet to the west of Green Valley Food Store.
We found that some items there are a bit cheaper. A gallon of water is $2 vs $2.50 at Green Valley Food Store.
If the store has the “Open” sign in the window but is locked during business hours then just knock on the door of the blue house next to it and wait for the owner to come and let you in the store.
They can take credit cards but strongly prefer cash.
The store is not air conditioned.
Supermarket in Major's Cay
Bonnie's Variety Store and Car Rental
Bonnie's Variety Store and Car Rental is easily recognized by the grand entrances to their governor's driveway with white lion sculptures. The store with it's two rooms is small and has a limited selection.
The store is cash-only.
How many gas stations are on Crooked Island?
We have seen 3 gas stations but only the gas station at Green Valley Food Store in Landrail Point is operating.
You will need to go into the supermarket and prepay. In November and December 2021 the price varied between $6-$7 per gallon.
The attendant will pump gas from a gasoline tractor trailer into your vehicle.
Where can I rent a car in Crooked Island?
There are two car rental companies on Crooked Island, Sharon's Boutique and Bonnie's Variety Store and Car Rental. You can either ask your hotel to reserve a rental car for you or you can call the rental companies directly.
The owner or your hotel personnel will deliver the car to your pickup location on the island (airport or hotel) and retrieve it from your drop-off location (airport or hotel).
There is no extra charge if the pick-up and drop-off locations are different.
Please be advised that the driver needs to be at least 24 years old to rent a car.
Roads on Crooked Island are paved and often in excellent shape with lane markings and reflectors in the pavement or in medium shape on crumbling but OK roads with occasional potholes.
Even though there are no speed limit signs, the speed limit outside the settlements is 45 mph (72 km/h), in the settlements 25 mph (40km/h) and in school zones 15 mph (24km/h).
Cars drive on the left hand side of the road like in England and Australia.
Be advised that the ferry to Acklins is for pedestrians only. If you want to explore Acklins then you will need to get to the ferry with your rental car and pick up another rental a car on the Acklins side of the ferry.

Sharon's Boutique
Sharon's Boutique is the largest clothing store on Crooked Island. You can also buy souvenirs, some housewares and beauty products here and rent a car.
Sharon is a nice lady and fantastic sales person.
She has another daytime job and therefore only opens Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm.
Crooked Island Lodge
Crooked Island Lodge in Pitts Town has a beach bar where you can buy alcohol.
What restaurants are on Crooked Island
Casuarina Pines Villas
The restaurant at Casuarina Pines Villas Hotel is open to everyone on the island and not just hotel guests. Hylene, the owner, typically comes in at around 5pm to open the restaurant and her dishes are large, taste well and are very reasonably priced.
She does not have a set menu and it is best to call beforehand to ask what she has and when to come in.
The best way to reach Hylene is by WhatsApp (+1-242-457-7005), but she responds promptly to Messenger (Casuarina Pines Villas) too.
Thursday evening is pizza and chicken night, which is popular with the locals and expats who call in their orders ahead of time. We had a great time talking to the locals and expats and even made friends with some of them.
Gibson’s Restaurant #2
The original Gibson’s Restaurant does not exist anymore and #2 is operated by the next Gibson generation. This is probably the most famous restaurant on the island, but we have not been there.
