The Nguyễn Tường Family Chapel is a lesser-known attraction in Hoi An. This humble ancestral home honors one of Vietnam’s most influential literary families, whose legacy shaped the country’s intellectual and political life throughout the 20th century.
The Nguyễn Tường family was one of the most prominent Confucian scholar families in Hội An during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The family produced several celebrated writers and political thinkers, most notably Nguyễn Tường Tam, who wrote under the pen name Nhất Linh, a towering figure in modern Vietnamese literature.
Nhất Linh co-founded the Tự Lực Văn Đoàn (Self-Reliance Literary Group) in the 1930s, which played a key role in promoting modern prose, journalism, and progressive thought in Vietnam. His novels challenged outdated social norms and advocated for women’s rights, personal freedom, and national reform. He later became involved in politics, holding positions in the short-lived Democratic Republic of Vietnam before becoming a vocal opponent of authoritarianism.
The Nguyễn Tường Family Chapel (Nhà Thờ Tộc Nguyễn Tường) was built to commemorate the family's ancestors and honor the legacy of its most famous sons. The modest wooden structure is nestled in the heart of Hội An’s historic district and carries a deep emotional weight, especially for those familiar with Vietnam’s 20th-century literary evolution.
Traditional Design: The chapel follows a three-room layout with simple wooden beams, red lacquered altars, and ancestral tablets arranged by lineage.
Exhibits and Memorabilia: Inside, visitors will find photos, documents, and writings from the Nguyễn Tường family, including first editions of Nhất Linh’s novels, newspaper clippings, and family portraits.
Ancestral Worship Practices: Like other family chapels in Vietnam, this space is used during death anniversaries and Lunar New Year (Tết) for incense offerings and remembrance rituals.
Literary Legacy: Panels in both Vietnamese and English explain the influence of the Tự Lực Văn Đoàn movement, placing Nhất Linh’s work in the context of Vietnam’s path toward modernization.
Hours: Typically open from 8:00am – 5:30pm
Entry: Included in the Hoi An Ancient Town ticket
Recommended Visit Duration: 20–30 minutes
Photography: Permitted, though visitors are asked to be respectful inside the altar area
