Minh Hương Communal House (Đình Minh Hương) is an 18th-century communal house was built by the Minh Hương people, ethnic Chinese who migrated to Vietnam and gradually integrated into local society while preserving their ancestral traditions.
The Minh Hương were descendants of Ming Dynasty loyalists who migrated to southern Vietnam in the late 17th and early 18th centuries after the fall of the Ming Dynasty to the Qing. Many of them fled persecution in China and settled in coastal regions of Vietnam, particularly Hoi An, where they became prosperous traders, artisans, and landowners.
While they adopted many Vietnamese customs over time, the Minh Hương community preserved aspects of their Chinese Confucian and Taoist beliefs, particularly around ancestor worship, community governance, and architecture.
The Minh Hương Communal House was built as a place to honor their ancestors, celebrate their cultural identity, and conduct civic and spiritual gatherings.
The Minh Hương Communal House exemplifies traditional Vietnamese architecture with strong Chinese influences. Constructed in the early 18th century and restored multiple times, the building retains much of its original woodwork and layout.
