Why You Should Visit

Bugis offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse past of Singapore and provides one of the best markets in the city for affordable clothing, accessories, and souvenirs at the Bugis Street Market. The area is also the gateway to the charming Arab Street and Kampong Glam district, which adds a distinct Malay and Middle Eastern cultural dimension to your visit. For those interested in religious architecture, the neighborhood features some of the oldest and most beautiful temples and mosques in Singapore.

What is Special About It?

  • Bugis Street Market: This is the largest street shopping location in Singapore, housing over 800 stalls in a sprawling, covered bazaar. It is the place to go for budget-friendly fashion, electronics, and local snacks such as ‘Thai-style’ grilled skewers and fresh fruit juices.
  • The Dual Nature of Retail: Directly opposite the traditional street market is Bugis Junction, a modern shopping mall that incorporates an ‘indoor street’ with air-conditioned shophouses under a massive glass roof. This allows you to experience the charm of old Singapore architecture without the humidity.
  • A Cultural Crossroads: Within a five-minute walk, you can transition from the bustling Chinese-influenced markets to the golden domes of the Sultan Mosque and the trendy, mural-filled alleys of Haji Lane.

History and Facts

  • The Seafaring Bugis: The area is named after the Bugis (or Buginese) people, a master seafaring ethnic group from South Sulawesi, Indonesia. They arrived in Singapore shortly after 1819 to trade coffee, gold dust, and spices. By the 1830s, the Bugis community in Singapore peaked at approximately 2,000 people and virtually controlled all trade with the eastern islands of the Malay Archipelago.
  • The ‘Boogie Street’ Era: From the 1950s to the early 1980s, Bugis Street gained international fame as a nightlife destination. It was renowned for its nightly gathering of transgender women, attracting large numbers of Western tourists and military personnel. This era of ‘revelry’ ended in the mid-1980s when the street was demolished to make way for the Bugis MRT Station and modern retail developments.
  • ‘Little Slope’: To the local Chinese community, the area was historically known as Xiao Po (Little Slope), distinguishing it from the ‘Big Slope’ of Chinatown. It was a dense economic zone packed with merchants, traders, and traditional craftsmen.
  • Religious Landmarks: The district is home to the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, built in 1884. This temple is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy and remains one of the most visited Buddhist temples in Singapore, known for its ‘accurate’ fortune-telling sticks.
