Backpack and Snorkel Purple Travel GuideNestled in the heart of Pokhara, the Old Pokhara Bazaar is a vibrant traditional market street that provides an authentic experience of Pokhara’s past, blending the charm of ancient architecture with the energy of daily life.
If you have had a chance to explore the more modern Lakeside area, you will find that the Old Pokhara Bazaar may remind you a bit of Kathmandu’s busy and traditional shopping streets.
The name ‘Old Pokhara Bazaar’ refers to the historic marketplace that once served as the central commercial area of the city. Pokhara, being a crucial trading route, was historically home to various ethnic groups, including the Gurungs, Magars, and Newars, all of whom contributed to the diverse cultural fabric of the city. The Bazaar itself dates back centuries, and its name reflects its longstanding role as a center for trade and social interaction, particularly during the days when it was the primary commercial route linking Pokhara with other parts of Nepal.
The narrow, winding streets are lined with traditional houses, small family-run shops (often belonging to the same family for generations), and local eateries. The bazaar is less tourist-centric compared to other areas (e.g. Lakeside) in Pokhara, making it a perfect spot for those wanting to experience authentic Nepali life. Here, you can find a variety of handmade goods, from intricately designed jewelry and colorful textiles to spices and local produce.
As a cultural and historical landmark, the Old Pokhara Bazaar is also a great place for photography, with its traditional and colorful buildings, vibrant street scenes, and some nice views of the surrounding mountains.
