If you are interested in seeing how rice grows, you can add a quick 15min stop on the outskirts of Pokhara. This is an optional stop – if you are not interested in seeing rice fields, then skip this stop.
Drive to the bridge at the above location, and park there. When you get out of the car and cross the bridge, you get right to the rice fields and you can touch the rice plants. Just be careful where you walk – rice needs a lot of water and depending on the growing season, the floor will be water (planting and growing season), mud (growing season), or mostly dry during harvesting season.
As this is not a tourist stop, nobody will chase you away, and you may see the occasional local quietly walking by.

Rice Planting Season in Pokhara

Here is more information about the rice planting season in Pokhara:

  • Planting Season: The rice planting season generally starts around mid-June with the arrival of the monsoon rains and can last for a couple of months, extending into July. A significant day in this period is Asar 15 (which usually falls in late June or early July), known as ‘National Paddy Day’ or ‘Ropain Diwas’, which marks the official beginning of the rice planting season and is celebrated with enthusiasm by farmers.

  • Growing Period: After planting, the rice crops grow throughout the wet monsoon months of July and August. The abundant rainfall during this time is crucial for the healthy development of the rice paddies.

  • Harvesting Season: The rice harvesting season typically begins in early October and concludes by the end of November. By this time, the monsoon rains have ceased, and the weather is generally clear and sunny, ideal for harvesting the mature rice crops.
