Tucked away in the heart of Gorkha Bazaar, the Gorkha Museum is the second most visited attraction in Gorkha, after Gorkha Durbar.
This modest yet historically rich museum offers insight into the life and times of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the visionary who unified the fragmented kingdoms into modern-day Nepal.

Origin of the name Gorkha Museum

The museum takes its name from the ancient kingdom of Gorkha, which served as the launching point for Nepal’s unification in the 18th century. The name ‘Gorkha’ later became world-renowned due to the bravery of the Gurkhas, elite soldiers whose origins trace back to this region. The Gorkha Museum stands as a tribute to that legacy — both royal and military.

What you will see at the Gorkha Museum

Located in a restored traditional building in Gorkha Bazaar, the museum showcases a collection that brings Nepal’s early history to life:

  • Royal Artifacts: Items used by King Prithvi Narayan Shah, including weapons, furniture, and clothing.

  • Military History: Exhibits on the Gorkhali army and its pivotal role in the unification of Nepal.

  • Cultural Displays: Tools, utensils, and traditional attire that reflect the lifestyle of people from the Gorkha region.

  • Historical Narratives: Informational panels that explain Gorkha’s rise to power and its lasting influence on the nation.

While small in size, the museum is thoughtfully organized and provides valuable context before visiting the nearby Gorkha Durbar Palace on the hill above the town.
