The name ‘Bhairabnath’ comes from the combination of ‘Bhairab’, a fierce and powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva, and ‘Nath’, meaning ‘lord’ or ‘master’. Bhairab is often depicted as a wrathful deity who represents destruction and renewal. In Nepalese Hinduism, Bhairab is considered a protector, warding off evil and ensuring the prosperity of those who worship him. The Bhairabnath Temple is thought to have been constructed during the medieval Malla period, around the 15th century, and its striking architecture reflects the era's devotion to craftsmanship and religious devotion.
The temple's architecture is a prime example of the intricately designed pagoda style, which is typical of temples in the Kathmandu Valley. The wooden carvings and the detailed sculptures surrounding the temple depict various gods and goddesses, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere.
