The name Taumadhi is believed to come from the Newar language, possibly referring to a raised or central gathering place, though its exact origin is debated. What is clear, however, is that Taumadhi Square has long been a major ceremonial and communal hub, hosting everything from religious rituals to grand chariot festivals.
At the heart of Taumadhi Square stands the iconic Nyatapola Temple, the tallest pagoda-style temple in Nepal.
Just beside it is the Bhairabnath Temple, dedicated to Bhairab, a powerful form of Lord Shiva.
The square itself is surrounded by traditional brick buildings, wooden balconies, and craft shops, many of which have been preserved or restored to retain the city’s historic charm.
Taumadhi Square comes alive during the Bisket Jatra, Bhaktapur’s famous New Year festival, when huge wooden chariots carrying the gods Bhairab and Bhadrakali are pulled through the square by cheering crowds. Even outside of festival season, you will find locals gathered on temple steps, artisans at work, and children playing, offering a glimpse into Bhaktapur’s vibrant, living culture.
