‘Natha’ means ‘lord’ or ‘master’, and ‘Kedara’ is a name associated with Lord Shiva. Thus, Kedāranātha refers to Shiva as the Lord of Kedara, evoking powerful symbolism of divine strength, protection, and spiritual liberation.
The name Kedāranātha also derives from ‘Kedarnath’, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and a prominent pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand, India.
The term ‘Jyotirlingas’ is a Sanskrit compound word meaning ‘lingam of light’ or ‘radiant sign of the Almighty’. In Hinduism, particularly in the Shaivite tradition (devoted to Lord Shiva), Jyotirlingas are highly revered shrines that are believed to be the twelve most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.
Unlike the more common pagoda-style temples found throughout the Kathmandu Valley, Kedāranātha Temple is built in the shikhara style, similar to nearby Badrinath Temple. While Badrinath Temple has one entrance facing east, Kedāranātha Temple has four facing in all cardinal directions. Constructed primarily from brick and terracotta, the temple features a striking vertical design with a central spire surrounded by four smaller pinnacles, each oriented toward a cardinal direction.
The temple is also known for its stone pillars and beautifully carved details, with artistic depictions of Lord Shiva and mythological motifs. Its unique form stands out in Bhaktapur’s architectural landscape.
