The name ‘Mul Chowk’ translates to ‘Main Courtyard’ in Nepali. It served as the central space of the Malla royal palace in Patan, where religious rituals, royal ceremonies, and important court functions were held. As the term ‘Mul’ implies, this courtyard was the core of palace life, both administratively and spiritually.
Mul Chowk was constructed during the Malla period, most likely in the 17th century. While an exact construction date is not definitively recorded, historical and architectural evidence suggests that King Siddhi Narsingh Malla (reigned 1619–1661) was instrumental in its development.
Mul Chowk is a stunning example of Newar architecture, with intricately carved wooden struts, windows, and doors surrounding the courtyard on all sides. At its center lies a small temple dedicated to Taleju Bhawani, the protective goddess of the Malla kings.
Severely damaged in the 2015 earthquake, the courtyard has since undergone major restoration and is now nearly complete.
