Backpack and Snorkel Purple Travel GuideBhimsen, also known as Bhima, is one of the five Pandava brothers (sons of King Pandu, although they were fathered by different gods) from the Mahabharata, revered for his immense physical strength, loyalty, and bravery. While Bhimsen is traditionally a Hindu warrior hero, in the Kathmandu Valley, particularly among the Newar merchant communities, he is also worshipped as a patron deity of trade and commerce.
Here at Backpack and Snorkel Travel Guides, we typically promote self-guided walking tours.

The temple was originally built in 1680 during the reign of King Srinivasa Malla, one of Patan's most prominent Malla kings. It stands out with its three-tiered pagoda design, intricately carved wooden struts, and beautifully detailed windows, a hallmark of classic Newar architecture.
The image of Bhimsen inside the temple is not open to tourists, but the temple's exterior and surrounding activity offer rich insight into its cultural importance.
Bhimsen Mandir is not just a religious site, it holds special importance for local traders and artisans (like shopkeepers, goldsmiths, and textile merchants), many of whom pray to Bhimsen for success in business. Offerings are often made during important festivals, especially Ghode Jatra and Yenya Punhi, when the temple becomes a hub of devotional activity.
