Backpack and Snorkel Purple Travel GuideNagbahal is a historic Buddhist monastic courtyard with origins possibly tracing back to the 8th century. Unlike a typical monastery hidden behind walls, Nagbahal is an open and active community space where the monastery is long gone, and replaced with gorgeous Newar architecture.
Here at Backpack and Snorkel Travel Guides, we typically promote self-guided walking tours.
But we realize that not everybody likes to walk by themselves in a foreign city. So, just in case that you rather go with ab guide: NO PROBLEM! Please see the Viator tours below.

The name Nagbahal combines two words: ‘Nāga’ (serpent deity) and ‘Baha’ or ‘Bahal’, a Newar term for a monastic courtyard. In Newar Buddhist cosmology, Nāgas are powerful serpent spirits often associated with water, protection, and fertility. As the name suggests, this courtyard was likely a site of Nāga worship and is believed to have been built over a sacred pond or spring, an element often associated with Nāga presence.
