Backpack and Snorkel Purple Travel GuideIkha Narayan Temple is a local shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is part of a network of Narayan temples found throughout the Kathmandu Valley, but it is not officially included in the traditional ‘Four Narayans’ pilgrimage circuit as some people claim. The Four Narayan Circuit temples are: Changu Narayan (east of Kathmandu), Ichangu Narayan (northwest of Kathmandu, Bishankhu Narayan (south of the Kathmandu), and Shesh Narayan (southwest of Kathmandu). None of them are part of this travel guide.
Here at Backpack and Snorkel Travel Guides, we typically promote self-guided walking tours.

The name ‘Ikha Narayan’ is rooted in the Newar language and Hindu tradition.
‘Ikha’ refers to the specific neighborhood or tole where the temple is located within Kathmandu’s ancient city layout.
‘Narayan’ is one of the many names of Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector in the Hindu trinity.
Together, Ikha Narayan refers to the Vishnu temple located in the Ikha neighborhood.
Though smaller in scale compared to temples like Pashupatinath or Changu Narayan, Ikha Narayan Temple holds deep religious value for local Hindus. It features classic Newar architecture, with a tiered pagoda-style roof, intricately carved wooden struts, and stone sculptures of deities and guardians.
I was totally fascinated by the gorgeously carved and painted wooden struts. Walk around the building and admire all of them – they look fantastic!
Today, Ikha Narayan Temple continues to serve as an important spiritual hub for residents of the area. Maintained by community caretakers, the temple also plays a role in preserving Kathmandu’s rich architectural and religious heritage.
Admission is free.
