Backpack and Snorkel Purple Travel GuideThe word ‘Tridevi’ translates to ‘three goddesses’ in Sanskrit. It refers to the female counterparts of the Hindu trinity (Trimurti):
Saraswati, goddess of wisdom and learning
Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity
Parvati, goddess of power and devotion
Together, they represent the feminine divine energy that complements and balances the male deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple celebrates this divine trio, making it a rare site where all three goddesses are worshipped together.

Tridevi Temple is part of the Tridevi Sadak complex, located near the Decheling Garden Restaurant that you likely visited last night, if you followed the itinerary laid out in this Backpack and Snorkel Nepal Purple Travel Guide.
The temple was likely built in the early 1800s by Randhwaj Thapa, the son of the mighty warrior Bada Kaji Amar Singh Thapa.
It reflects traditional Nepali architecture with beautifully carved wooden doors, tiered roofs, and vibrant religious iconography.
Each of the three goddesses has her own shrine within the temple compound, and they are regularly worshipped by devotees seeking blessings for knowledge, fortune, and spiritual strength. The temple plays a significant role during Hindu festivals, particularly during Saraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, and Teej, when the site comes alive with rituals, offerings, and local celebrations.
Today, Tridevi Temple remains a vital part of Kathmandu’s religious life, especially for students, entrepreneurs, and families who visit to seek divine guidance. Despite being located on a busy street in a busy commercial area, the temple maintains a quiet and relaxed atmosphere.
Admission is free.
Etiquette: Modest clothing is recommended. Visitors are welcome to offer prayers, observe rituals, and take respectful photographs.
