The name ‘Sankateshwor Bhagawati’ is steeped in spiritual symbolism. ‘Sankat’ means ‘danger’ or ‘crisis’ in Sanskrit, and ‘Ishwor’ means ‘lord’ or ‘divine being’. Combined, ‘Sankateshwor’ can be understood as ‘the divine protector in times of trouble’.

Historical and Cultural Significance of Bhagwati Bahal Temple

Sankateshwor Bhagawati Temple is a small brass-roofed single-story temple that is believed to date back to the medieval Malla period, but unfortunately no details about its construction are known. The temple's architecture reflects traditional Newar craftsmanship, with intricately carved woodwork, metal detailing, and a central shrine housing the image of the goddess Bhagwati.
For centuries, local devotees have turned to Sankateshwor Bhagawati for protection during times of illness, natural disasters, or personal hardship. She is especially venerated during Dashain, Nepal’s biggest Hindu festival, when the temple becomes a center of activity with special pujas, offerings, and animal sacrifices performed in her honor.
