Historical Significance of Bikramshila Mahaviha Temple

Bikramshila Mahavihar, also known locally as Bhaidegah or Bhaidegah Vihar, is one of the many bahals (courtyard monasteries) in Patan. Dating back to the medieval Malla period, the temple is a fine example of Newar Buddhist architecture, characterized by carved wooden windows, intricate brickwork, and traditional stone sculptures.
These mahavihars served as both religious centers and community hubs. Monks would live, study, and teach within the compound, and local residents often participated in daily rituals and festivals.

The Bikramshila Mahaviha Temple Today

Today, Bikramshila Mahavihar Temple remains an active place of worship. Local devotees visit regularly to light butter lamps, make offerings, and participate in Buddhist ceremonies.
Its peaceful, but mostly empty, courtyard offers a quiet retreat from the city’s bustling streets outside. Tucked away at the far end of the courtyard is a small white and golden stupa.
