The name Bhuvaneshwor Mahadev combines two key elements from Hindu tradition. ‘Bhuvaneshwor’ translates to ‘Lord of the Universe’, a reference to Lord Shiva, who is considered the supreme deity in Hinduism. The name emphasizes the temple’s dedication to Lord Shiva in his form as the ruler of all realms. ‘Mahadev’ is another name for Shiva, highlighting his divine and cosmic authority.
‘Shree’ is a Sanskrit word that is used as a respectful prefix in many Hindu names and titles. It's similar to ‘Mr.’ or ‘Ms.’ in English, but with a more deeply spiritual connotation. When used before the name of a deity, like Bhuvaneshwor Mahadev, it signifies the divine nature and importance of the deity.
The Shree Bhuvaneshwor Mahadev Temple having domed roofs is an interesting architectural deviation from the more common pagoda or shikhara styles found in the Kathmandu Valley. We don’t know why this temple looks so different, but here are some possible reasons:
Symbolic Meaning
Domed roofs can have symbolic meanings, representing the celestial dome or the cosmic sphere, which would align with the name Bhuvaneshwor = Lord of the Universe.
Mughal Influence
Domed roofs are a prominent feature of Mughal architecture, which was influential in the Indian subcontinent during the medieval and early modern periods. There might have been some influence from this style, either directly or indirectly, on the temple's design.
Renovation and Reconstruction
The domed roof might be a result of a later renovation, where the original design was altered.
