The temple’s name, Indrapur, literally means ‘the place or city of Indra’. In Hindu mythology, Indra is the king of the gods and ruler of Svarga Loka (the heavenly realm). He is revered as the bringer of rain and storms, making him an important deity in an agrarian society like ancient Nepal. The temple’s dedication to Indra reflects both religious devotion and a practical appeal for favorable weather and agricultural prosperity.
The Indrapur Temple is modest in scale, often overshadowed by the towering pagodas around it, but it remains a fine example of traditional Newar temple architecture. Built on a raised platform with a tiered roof, the temple features carved wooden struts, brickwork, and a central shrine that enshrines a symbolic representation of Lord Indra. It is typically closed to the public, but its presence in the square is a quiet reminder of the many layers of worship that coexist in this cultural crossroads.
Indrapur Temple plays a key role during the annual Indra Jatra festival, which is one of the most vibrant celebrations in Kathmandu. The festival honors Lord Indra and involves days of processions, traditional dances, and rituals. The temple becomes a symbolic anchor point, linking the mythological past with the living traditions of the city.
