Origin of the name Stone Vishnu Temple

The temple derives its name from the stone image of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in the Hindu trinity, which is preserved within the shrine. Unlike the towering wooden or brick temples that dominate Durbar Square, this small temple is constructed largely from stone, giving it both its name and its unique character.
The use of durable stone also reflects the ancient belief in creating sacred structures meant to withstand time, ensuring that the deity’s presence remains anchored in the heart of the city.

Historical Significance and Design of Stone Vishnu Temple

The Stone Vishnu Temple is believed to date back to the Licchavi or early Malla period, making it one of the older religious structures in the area. Although relatively humble in size and ornamentation, it holds deep religious significance for local worshippers, particularly Vaishnavites (followers of Vishnu).
The temple features a finely carved image of Vishnu in his classical form, often shown with four arms holding the conch, discus, mace, and lotus which are symbolizing divine power and protection.
