The National Museum of Malaysia, known locally as Muzium Negara, serves as the definitive guardian of the nation’s history. Located on the fringe of the Perdana Botanical Gardens, the building itself is a masterpiece designed to resemble a grand Malay royal palace. Since its opening in 1963, it has provided visitors with a chronological journey from the dawn of time to the modern achievements of the 21st century.

Why You Should Visit

You should visit the National Museum to understand the ‘soul’ of Malaysia. It is the best place to gain context on how the country’s diverse Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Indigenous cultures have woven together over millennia. The museum is designed for self-discovery; you can walk through the galleries at your own pace, moving from prehistoric caves to the royal courts of the 15th century, making it an essential first stop to truly appreciate the heritage sites you will see later in the day.

What is Special About It?

  • The Mosaic Murals: Before entering, look up at the two massive murals on the front of the building. Made of Italian glass mosaic, they span over 35 meters each and tell the story of the nation’s historical episodes and traditional crafts.
  • The Perak Man: In the Prehistory Gallery, you can see a replica of the ‘Perak Man’, the oldest and most complete human skeleton found in Southeast Asia, dating back over 11,000 years.
  • Royal Regalia and Weaponry: The Malay Kingdoms Gallery features an exquisite collection of royal headgear, jewelry, and the legendary keris (wavy-bladed daggers). These artifacts showcase the incredible craftsmanship of the Malacca Sultanate era.
  • Outdoor Transportation Exhibit: The museum compound is an open-air gallery of its own. You will find vintage steam locomotives, the first national car (the Proton Saga), and even a massive 19th-century timber palace called Istana Satu, which was moved here from Terengganu to showcase traditional wood carving and tropical architecture.

History and Facts

  • The Site’s Past: The museum stands on the site of the former Selangor Museum, which was accidentally destroyed during an Allied bombing raid in 1945 during World War II.
  • Royal Inspiration: The architect, Ho Kok Hoe, was inspired by the traditional ‘Rumah Gadang’ architecture and the royal audience halls of northern Malaysia, ensuring the building had a distinctly national identity.
  • A Heritage Landmark: In 2015, the building was officially recognized as a National Heritage Building under Malaysian law.
