Backpack and Snorkel Purple Travel GuideThe National Museum of Malaysia, known locally as Muzium Negara, serves as the definitive guardian of the nation’s history. Located on the fringe of the Perdana Botanical Gardens, the building itself is a masterpiece designed to resemble a grand Malay royal palace. Since its opening in 1963, it has provided visitors with a chronological journey from the dawn of time to the modern achievements of the 21st century.
Here at Backpack and Snorkel Travel Guides, we promote self-guided walking tours.
But we realize that not everybody likes to walk by themselves in a foreign city. So, just in case that you rather go with ab guide: NO PROBLEM! Please see the GuruWalk and Viator tours below.

You should visit the National Museum to understand the ‘soul’ of Malaysia. It is the best place to gain context on how the country’s diverse Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Indigenous cultures have woven together over millennia. The museum is designed for self-discovery; you can walk through the galleries at your own pace, moving from prehistoric caves to the royal courts of the 15th century, making it an essential first stop to truly appreciate the heritage sites you will see later in the day.
