If you want to explore Los Cabos and need access to Federal Highway 1, and/or don’t want to stay in an expensive luxury resort, but want to be close to shopping and beaches, then you may want to stay in a hotel between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Here are some options in alphabetical order:
Cabo Cottage Bahia del Tezal (map, our review, reviews and booking)
Cabo Surf Hotel (map, reviews and booking)
Holiday Inn Express Cabo San Lucas by IHG (map, our review, reviews and booking)
Villa La Estancia - Medano Beach Villas (map, reviews and booking)
Villa La Valencia Beach Resort & Spa Los Cabos (map, reviews and booking)
Cabo Cottage Bahia del Tezal is in a perfect location. Right off Highway 1, but far enough away that you don’t hear street noise, and close enough to the eastern part of Medano Beach that you can walk there.
The condo is located in one of two a multi-story condo buildings with its own secure parking lot inside the courtyard.
Elevators connect the floors and work most of the time.
The condo is spacious and very well equipped. The kitchen has all pots, pans and utensils you need, and the owner even provides a beach umbrella, beach chairs, and beach towels.
The unit comes with a laundry machine, all bed linens and towels you need. It is in very good condition and shows very little wear.
Wifi is fast and the A/C is quiet and efficient.
Once in a while there is a bit of a sewer smell, apparently from emptying the sewage cistern.
The building has a rooftop pool from which you can see beautiful sunsets over the city.
The personnel and condo owner are very friendly and responsive.
To get to the eastern side of Medano Beach, just exit the building and turn left.
After a few feet you come to the entrance gate of the RIU Palace. Enter through the pedestrian entrance and walk straight towards the main building you see. You will pass a parking lot and cross a bridge doing this. When you get to the large lawn after the tennis courts, turn left and follow the path around the lawn, pass by the swim-up suites, and go to the gate. When you go down the steps behind the gate, you are on Medano Beach.
Be advised that the gate is the border of the RIU Palace hotel, and that hotel staff keep it unlocked between 9am and 6pm (at the time of writing). The opening times are clearly posted on the gate. If you stay on the beach after 6pm, then you will need to find another way to get back to your condo.
The walk from the condo to Medano Beach is about 2,000 ft (610 m)
Long story short: This is a very good place to stay in Cabo San Lucas, and we would stay here again.
Holiday Inn Express Cabo San Lucas is a nice and reasonably priced hotel on Highway 1, located about 3 miles outside of Cabo San Lucas. The decor is very modern and the hotel is clean and the rooms are spacious.
The hotel has no beach access. There are an unpaved road, a fence and a trench that separate the hotel from surrounding private properties. We saw chicken and goats on those private lots.
You will need a car to go anywhere. Costco is right across the street and Walmart is about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) miles away. There are few restaurants within walking distance. What stands out about this hotel is the super helpful and extremely friendly hotel staff, who speak good English.
We had room 247 which has an amazing view of the ocean and Land's End. It is a very nice clean room with a king-size bed and a very modern bathroom with an interestingly looking very modern sink and everything there worked perfectly. The furniture showed little sign of wear.
The dark drapes in the rooms are only decorative and cannot be closed to darken the room at night and the temperature display on the A/C unit is bright enough to light up the room at night. The A/C is efficient and fairly quiet.
Wifi is fast.
The hotel has a small outdoor pool on the 2nd floor and a guest laundry close to it.
The price was very competitive and breakfast is included. For breakfast, they have a small buffet with bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, sliced sausages, cream cheese, cereal, fruits, yogurt, and some Mexican dishes. The staff is very friendly and helpful and they immediately collect empty plates. One day the coffee pot was empty and they saw that I was looking for coffee. Immediately after getting new coffee, they brought a cup to my table. Great, thank you!
Long story short: This is a very nice and reasonably priced hotel. We recommend it.
