Raj Ghat is a small, but immensely significant monument. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, it marks the spot where Mahatma Gandhi, the ‘Father of the Nation’, was cremated on January 31, 1948 (cremation ground is called a Samadhi), 1 day after he was assassinated.
The memorial is deliberately minimalist, designed to encourage reflection on Gandhi's life principles of simplicity, peace, and non-violence. It stands as one of the most respected and visited national memorials in India, welcoming millions of visitors, including world leaders, every year.

Why You should Visit

  • Symbolism: A visit to Raj Ghat is an opportunity to pay respects to the man who led India to freedom and whose philosophy of Satyagraha (truth force) influenced global civil rights movements.

  • A Retreat of Peace: Unlike many historical sites in Delhi, Raj Ghat is intensely quiet and beautifully manicured. The atmosphere of solemn reflection provides a peaceful contrast to the chaotic, vibrant city just outside its gates.

  • Architectural Simplicity: The memorial is minimalist in design. Its simplicity is a direct reflection of Gandhi's philosophy, proving that the greatest tributes do not require extravagance.

History and Importance

The Samadhi (Cremation Site)
Raj Ghat literally means 'Royal Steps' or 'Royal Bank.' The site was traditionally a ghat (steps leading to a river) used for cremating royal families. It gained its unique historical significance after the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand (Mathatma) Gandhi on January 30, 1948.

  • The Final Rites: Gandhi was cremated here the day after his death, according to Hindu tradition. The immediate site was developed into the national memorial.

  • The Inscription: Hē Rām: The most moving detail is the simple inscription carved into the black stone: ‘Hē Rām’ (Oh God). These words are believed to be the last spoken by Gandhi as he fell to the assassin's bullets.

  • National Memorial: Because of its solemn history, Raj Ghat is now the site of state functions, particularly on October 2nd (Gandhi Jayanti, his birthday) and January 30th (Martyr's Day, his death anniversary). Foreign dignitaries and heads of state are expected to pay their respects here when visiting Delhi.

What Can Be Seen There: Architecture and Design

The design of the memorial is governed by a singular principle: simplicity and homage to the earth.

  • The Memorial Platform: The centerpiece of Raj Ghat is a square, elevated platform of polished black marble. It is kept uncovered, open to the sky, and constantly tended. The platform is surrounded by a low wall and a beautifully kept grassy area.

  • The Eternal Flame: At one end of the black stone platform, a perpetual flame burns inside a small structure. This flame symbolizes the eternal legacy of Gandhi's ideals.

  • The Gardens and Trees: The memorial is nestled within a large, sprawling, and meticulously maintained park designed by architect Van Miert in 1951. The serene gardens are designed to isolate the site from the urban noise. Surrounding the Samadhi are trees planted by many visiting heads of state, including Queen Elizabeth II and former US Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower (1959), George H.W. Bush (1984), Bill Clinton (2000), Barack Obama (2015), and Donald Trump (2020).

  • The Path to Reflection: Visitors traverse a short, paved stone path to reach the platform – please approach the memorial with respect and quietude.
