The salt pond is an inland lake that was used in the past to extract salt from ocean water. This industry was abandoned on Crooked Island but is still practiced on nearby Inagua Island. Nowadays, Salt Pond with its mangroves is a paradise for sea birds and, during certain times of the year, for flamingoes. Salt Pond starts at the bridge near Casuarina Pine Villas Hotel and ends near the eastern end of North Beach.
Turtle Sound in Crooked Island
Turtle Sound is a large inland lake that is connected to the Bight of Acklins near French Wells through roughly 4 mile (6.5km) rivers. Its beautiful turquoise waters and mangrove lined shores are a paradise for turtles, fish and lots of birds. There is an access point with a boat launch at Bird Grove Settlement.
