Backpack and Snorkel Travel Guide for a tour of the Zekreet Peninsula - Qatar Purple Travel Guide
Today, we will explore Qatar’s Zekreet Peninsula, where we will see beautiful Mushroom Rock formations, and art in the desert. We provide detailed information and we show lots of photos so you know what you can expect.
If you enjoyed the camel ride yesterday, then you will be in for a treat as augment our by visiting Camel Racetracks.
There are many tours to Qatar’s Zekreet Peninsula that are offered from Doha, but only few take time to explore the Camel Racetracks. That’s why we really liked the private Zekreet Peninsula tour from Golden Adventures Qatar (book). During the 4h tour, you will visit:
There will be three stops. The Zekreet Peninsula, also known as the Abrouq Peninsula, is named after the village of Zekreet. It is known for its erosional landforms which are formed from the erosion of the two dominant soil layers in this area: an upper layer of dull-colored dolomitic limestone that is approx. 7 ft (2 m) thick, and a lower layer of brightly-colored slightly dolomitic marl which is approx. 30 ft (10 m) thick. The erosional landforms form, because both layers exhibit different erosion speeds.
Richard Serra sculptures
Richard Serra is a US artist who is known for his large-scale sculptures that explore the three-way relationship between the specific site where they are located, the viewers, and the artwork itself. Upon Qatari request to build a sculpture in the desert of the Brouq Nature Reserve in Qatar's Zekreet Peninsula, Serra built the East-West/West-East sculpture in 2014. After finishing it, he is on record for exclaiming: This is the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. It’s a piece that I’d really like to be seen.
East-West/West-East consists of four steel plates which are aligned along a one-kilometer (0.62 mi) stretch of the desert in East-West direction. The top of all plates is aligned and, because of the uneven landscape, they are all over 46 ft (14 m) tall, but have different heights.
The steel came from Germany and it was selected, because its of its specific color changes during the rusting process. As the plates are black, they can get too hot to touch in summer.
