Flowers Cove Thrombolites
Flower's Cove is famous for its 650 million years-old thrombolites.
Park at the small parking lot and then follow the path to the red-roof Marjorie’s Bridge and continue on the easy trail to the end where the thrombolites are. The length of the trail is about 0.5 miles (800 m).
Thrombolites consist of many small millimeter-to-centimeter sized clots that can be interspersed with sand, mud, or carbonate rock particles. Each clot contains a separate cyanobacterial colony and has a complex internal structure formed by calcification of the cyanobacterial colony.
The Thrombolites that you see are typically several feet in diameter and contain large numbers of clots.
There are less than 20 places on our planet where Thrombolites are found, but only Lake Clifton in Australia has the same type of Thrombolites.
Where to stay in Grand Falls-Windsor
With a population just shy of 14,000 people, Grand Falls-Windsor is the largest town in the central region of Newfoundland.
It was formed by the merger of Grand Falls and Windsor in 1991.
The town of Grand Falls was established in 1905 and named after the nearby water fall that was named in 1768: Grand Falls.
This concludes your tour for today.
