Origin of the Name Char Narayan

The name ‘Char Narayan’ refers to Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities of the Hindu pantheon, who is also known as Narayan. ‘Char’ means ‘four’, and it is believed the temple honors one of the four sacred Narayan shrines placed at the four corners of the Kathmandu Valley.

The local name ‘Pyamha Narandya’ comes from the Newar language, with ‘Pyamha’ meaning ‘upper’ or ‘elevated’, indicating its position in the city, and ‘Narandya’ being a form of Narayan. In Hinduism, Narayan is a significant deity, often considered synonymous with Vishnu. He represents the aspect of Vishnu as the Supreme Being, the source of all creation, preservation, and destruction. Narayana is often depicted resting on the cosmic waters (Nara), which symbolizes his role in creation. The term ‘Narayana’ itself is derived from ‘Nara’ (water) and ‘Ayana’ (resting place), signifying ‘one who rests on the waters’. In Vaishnavism, the tradition that centers on Vishnu, Narayana is considered the ultimate reality, the Supreme Being. He is seen as the foundation of all existence.

History of Char Narayan Temple

Originally built in 1566 by Purandara Singh, a ruler of the Malla dynasty, the temple is a textbook example of classic multi-tiered pagoda design. Its intricate wood carvings, especially on the struts and door frames, are among the finest in the valley, showcasing detailed depictions of gods, mythical creatures, and floral motifs.
Tragically, Char Narayan Temple collapsed during the 2015 earthquake, but thanks to extensive restoration efforts using traditional materials and methods, it has been faithfully reconstructed and stands again in its original glory.
The temple's central statue has an inscription mentioning the year 1563. As there is strong evidence that the temple was built in 1566, it is believed that the statue is likely older than the temple.
